Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 to Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Roberts is the fourth Roberts generation to reside in Atlanta from her great-grandfather who was a farmer John Pendleton Roberts. In the early years of his life, her dad became fascinated by theatre. He performed on his Emory University campus in 1952 as well as in various productions around Atlanta. After joining the airforce, in 1953 he appeared in an airforce production in Biloxi together with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple got married in the year 1955. Their first baby son Eric Anthony, was born in 1956. Walter went to Tulane University at New Orleans, Louisiana in 1957 after they had separated from the US Air Force. Walter began his work at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. Walter along with Betty Lou began producing a television show for children in the city of Decatur, Georgia titled Bum Bum and His Buddies. They funded the show themselves. The Actors and Writers Workshop was created in the year 1964 and ran for six years. In 1965, they welcomed two new children: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
